April 16, 2012   Promoting Critical Operant-Based Leadership While Decreasing Ubiquitous Directives and Exhortations. JOBM, 31: 236-261, 2011.

Teaser: As behavior analysts we know that simply telling people what to do is not the best way to motivate people. Yet when confronted with problems involving the work force, giving directives and exhortations are common management practices...Daniels (2000) captures the dilemma well: "We send memos, have meetings, write policies, hold classes, and make informational and inspirational speeches." Unfortunately, when the directives and exhortations do not have the effect we want, we often tell the same folks all over again in much the same way, "only this time we tell them a little louder, or a little longer, or perhaps a little meaner (p.17)."
